about

This is probably one of the poppiest tunes in the Eisenhowers catalogue. The lyric tries to get inside the head of a guy who nurses a crush on someone he sees every day on his commute to work. The protagonist is trying to imagine a situation in which he will have the courage to make an approach to the woman of his dreams, but every scenario he envisages (she gets on his train, she walks down his street) is underpinned by the sad recognition that he will never pluck up the courage to ask her out. His haplessness is emphasised in the fadeout, wherein the extent of his detachment from reality is conveyed by the repetition of the line ‘if she gets on my train, we could have a conversation’. As is often the case, failure seems a more interesting topic than success.
