about

This song was originally written for Gum’s 2006 album ‘Seven Feeble Alibis’ but we never quite managed to nail an arrangement that worked. A couple of years later, with a change of personnel and a change of key, we turned it into a melancholic and downbeat closer for this album. The track, as it sails off into the distance, tries to evoke the mid-seventies symphonic grandeur of ELO. One reviewer claimed that it was melodramatic and a bit over the top, but I took that as something of a compliment. The arrangement provides a rewarding headphone experience and, to be frank, recording that outro was close to being the most fun I’ve had with my clothes on.

In addition to Kelsey Hunter’s harmonies on the choruses and some splendid cello work from the very talented Christine Hanson, there are some beautifully eerie and breathy vocal layers provided by Toby Campbell from the American band Anomie Belle. Toby’s parts were actually recorded in the US and sent to Scotland via the miracle of electronic mail.
So what exactly does Icarus ‘succumb’ to, apart from gravity? Answers on a postcard to this address, but if you guess temptation, hubris, stupidity, lust and all the other sins that make life so much fun, you won’t be far wrong.

lyrics

Are you thinking what I’m thinking now? Will you find your way to me? Can you taste what I am tasting now … is it medicine or mercury?
Icarus flew too close to the sun; everything he was became undone.
After all, I guess that he was dumb, thinking he’d do anything but succumb.

Maybe we should find another turn, take it down a different street?
Maybe we are going to crash and burn, but the taste could be so sweet.
Icarus flew to close too the sun; everything he was became undone.
After all, I guess that he was dumb, thinking he’d do anything but succumb.
And how could he do anything but succumb?

about

The Eisenhowers Glasgow, UK

The music of The Eisenhowers presents an eclectic mix, inspired by the likes of Elvis Costello, David Bowie, The Kinks and Steely Dan. Following 2021's critically-acclaimed 'Judge a man by the company he keeps', the new album. 'Nudge Unit Blues', represents something of a departure, featuring, as it does, a somewhat dystopian take on recent events. It's still about the tunes, though! ... more
